Making of Nike x HIFANA – Nike Music Shoe | Video

The behind-the-scenes and creation of this amazing video...

"So there have been some crazy things people have done with shoes– turned them into sculptures, turned them into running tracks, collected them as if they are loot excavated from King Tut’s grave, then turned them into gaming consoles…but nothing thus far has been nearly as outrageous and outlandish and difficult to execute as transforming them into musical instruments. With a zany concept and a even more admirable and bizarre ability to accomplish them to pitch perfection (pun absolutely intended), W+K Tokyo alongside a group of ambitious and incredibly talented hardware and sound engineers set out to transform Nike Free Run+ sneakers into instruments instead of just protection for your feet. As previously reported, Japanese break-beat group HIFANA then held a private performance in Tokyo with these shoes, swapping them out for their usual mixers and sound set up.

The way this crazy project was executed was rather ingenious, not to mention tedious– for both the engineers and HIFANA. First, hardware including three sensors were attached to the soles of the shoes, and these sensors will send serial codes to the computer when bent or inclined at certain angles. These serial codes will them be transformed into music output. However, to the W+K Tokyo crew who only strive for perfection, having these sensors didn’t generate enough sounds and tones, so they developed a software to go along with their new instruments.
The engineers were rather worried about letting people other than engineers handle the shoes, and the learning process wasn’t quite so easy for HIFANA at first. But, as the performance we had previously posted proved, HIFANA exceeded expectations and gave one of the most memorable performances with shoes. Check out the behind-the-scenes video and then go back to the original video to fully appreciate the extraordinary project from Nike, W+K Tokyo and HIFANA." - Freshness

OriginalFake x MEDICOM TOY – KAWS Dissected Companion Be@rbrick Black

The final 'brick in the Dissected series...looking good, coming soon, and can't wait.

"After a fully colored, and a gray scaled version, OriginalFake and MEDICOM TOY have decided to blackout one of the most coveted toys created– the Dissected Compaion Be@rbrick. Like the other Dissected buddies, this little Be@rbrick will continue to feature exposed guts and brains, tickling that very same nerve which drives us all to watch SAW every Halloween even though we hate it. Except KAWS’ Dissected Companion vinyl buddy is way more adorable, and not nearly as repulsive.
While the little dissected friend does feature its exposed body parts in a rainbow of colors, the rest of it is muted and solemn in black, and hence, slightly darker than the colored version which could still be passed off as playful and happy (though it really depends on a subjective interpretation of “happiness”). The new black Dissected Companion is set to drop on May 8 in all three sizes, the 100%, 400% and 1000%, at OriginalFake stores.

A release won’t take place until 2011, but an interesting development nevertheless.

Banksy in San Francisco...

Wouldn't have it any other way...good to know he made his mark here!
"Following a successful premier in the City by the Bay, San Francisco receives another dose of Banksy as a couple of new pieces were spotted in town, more specifically on Valencia St. Both follow the artist’s usually humorous approach with one of the pieces possibly relating back to the recent LA wall removal incident. If in town, don’t miss out!" - Hypebeast - L. Ruano

Stussy x Dickies – Spring/Summer 2010 – Worker Cropped Pants

Nice, lookin' good for a summer ride...

"Saving all the trouble of cuffing the pants, the popular Worker Pants from Stussy’s collaboration with heritage workwear label, Dickies, is going shorter. Perfect to cyclists and summer heat (a little baring makes a whole lot of cooling difference), the shrunken version of the Dickies Worker Pants comes with the same Stussy touches such as a small embroidered logo on the front pocket, and the Stussy’s four cities are printed onto a zipper detail on the back pocket.

Like their longer counterparts, the pants come in three different versions, the khaki, the denim and a dressier heather grey model. These are set to hit stores this Saturday, and it will be arriving at the Stussy web chapter next Friday.

Release Date: April 24th (Saturday)" - Freshness

Essential Designs x Porter 2010 Spring/Summer Collection

I have a soft spot for perforated leather. These design are definitely essential...for my collection. (Cheesy, yes...I know.) Among most of Porter's designs, their perf. leather is my absolute favorite and in fact, the first design that really caught my eye. I was at Stussy in NYC  in 2006 (Soho I think...If I remember clearly) and I saw a cream colored, perforated leather, card case made by Porter. I regretfully passed at the time and have never seen it again since then.  This is the first time I've seen them bring this leather treatment back in a long while. I could also be mistaken and they very well could have released a similar design recently, I just haven't been able to keep up on everything.

Despite the fact that I've already got a few Porter wallets/card cases, I'm may have to consider one of these if practicality and rationale doesn't take over me, haha. They're so clean and simple. Porter, you've done it again and I'm constantly saddened at the fact that there aren't any Porter stores stateside. Fortunately there are a few retailers, but even then they're not easily accessible. One day...one day.

"The ongoing Essential Designs x Porter collaboration wallet and accessories collection continues on with some new releases for the 2010 spring/summer season. The collection goes beyond the wallets seen here to also include bags and other forms of luggage. Styles seen here include a madras theme as well as perforated black leather. Available through ARKKABAN." - Hypebeast - Eugene Kan

Visvim – Ballistic 20L Backpack Light Blue

More competition for my North Face pack...sigh, decisions decisions...

"Apart from the iconic footwear range, visvim are also known for their bags and accessories line. One of the fan favorites is the Ballistic backpack which comes with a rather overwhelmingly generous 20-liter capacity.

The latest version of the 20L backpack from visvim’s 2010 Spring/Summer collection is a summery light blue version that constructed from Cordura ballistic nylon. This material is seven times stronger than conventional nylon and is also highly water resistant, which makes it perfect for both urban and serious outdoor use. Horse hide leather is used on the bottom of the bag and on the inside, the lining is printed with custom hexagon graphic pattern." - Freshness

Nike x HIFANA – Nike Music Shoe | Video

Visual and audible stimuli...

"Some where in a top secret location in Tokyo, break beat music duo, HIFANA (composed of KEIZOmachine and JUICY)  discovered that Nike Free Run+ running shoes can drop beats like realtime samplers and no other. HIFANA eschewed a part of their regular break beat set up and hooked up the mixers and sound systems to Nike Free Run+ shoes. When bent or twisted, the ultra-flexible Nike Free Run+ drops different tunes and sounds. Furthering proving that every pair of shoes is different and there is a pair for everyone, and that the great performance Nike Free Run+ is flexible enough to fit any feet and running style or activity, the Nike Music Shoe video is not just about shoes as instruments. Check out the hopping performance from HIFANA which is signature of their creative and original live performances, and see how Nike shoes can sing different tunes. Just take note, the actual Nike Free Run+ sold in stores is absolutely and exclusively a running shoe, and will not sing when bent or twisted, so don’t rush to throw out your mixers just yet." - Freshness

KAWS Book by Rizzoli...

Sounds like another good book to pick up...
"This year New York’s Rizzoli will be publishing and releasing a new 256-page page book that provides an retrospective look into one of the most influential artist’s of our generation, KAWS. This book comes on the heels of some other notable Rizzoli publications including Kanye West’s “Glow in the Dark” book, Supreme’s “Downtown Skate Culture” book, as well as the A Bathing Ape (BAPE) book. While the release date of the KAWS book has not been confirmed, here is a preview of the cover art for the book. via Guillotine // Rizzoli
A vibrant look at the celebrated artist and designer KAWS. This comprehensive monograph explores KAWS’s art career in depth, from his early street art interventions to his recent send-ups of familiar cultural icons. With wit, irreverence, and even affection, KAWS takes infamous entertainment characters such as the Simpsons and the Smurfs and traps them in plastic blister packages while reinterpreting their appearance. The packaged “Kimpsons” and “Kurfs” are new types of hybrid artworks that both serve and criticize contemporary consumer culture. Also featured is KAWS’s astute and prolific body of commercial work, including apparel from his Japanese store OriginalFake, a partnership with Medicom Toy, as well as product design, limited-edition toys, graphic designs; collaborations with architect Masamichi Katayama and artists Hajime Sorayama, Todd James, and Mark Dean Veca; collaborations with companies including Comme des Garçons, Levis, Lucas Films, The Simpsons, Nike, Supreme, and Marc Jacobs; and Japanese companies such as A Bathing Ape, Undercover, and Visvim."- Freshness

Art Space: Tokyo...

A useful book for anyone planning a trip to Tokyo in search of galleries and museums...

"Due to overwhelming demand, Art Space Tokyo is being considered for a re-print in its original hardcover format, should enough people pre-order the book. For all those who missed out on this comprehensive guide to Tokyo’s contemporary arts scene, the 272-page book introduces twelve of the city’s most architecturally and historically distinctive art galleries and museums via interviews, essays, maps and illustrations by Nobumasa Takahashi. The book also features two detailed maps, a sewn-in bookmark and a two-color silk-screened cloth cover, all of which bring an artistic quality to the book itself.

If the money raised from the pre-order reaches $15,000 the book will be re-released and an iPad edition with additional content will be produced. However, should the target fail to be reached, customers will be refunded and the project will be cancelled. Pre-order your copy here.

Banksy: Exit Through the Gift Shop (Extended Preview)

Banksy's Exit Through the Gift Shop nears...

"After an initial showing at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, Banksy’s “Exit Through the Gift Shop” readies for a more wide-spread release with this extended look. The 5 minute sneak peek also goes into detail regarding the background and the involvement of French filmmaker, Terry Guetta who becomes an interesting dynamic to the whole movie. A further synopsis can be seen below.

Exit Through the Gift Shop, the first film by renowned graffiti artist Banksy, became the hottest ticket at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival where it made its world debut. Banksy is a graffiti artist with a global reputation whose work can be seen on walls from post—hurricane New Orleans to the separation barrier on the Palestinian West Bank. Fiercely guarding his anonymity to avoid prosecution, Banksy has so far resisted all attempts to be captured on film. Exit Through the Gift Shop tells the incredible true story of how an eccentric French shop keeper turned documentary maker attempted to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner with spectacular results. The film contains exclusive footage of Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Invader and many of the worlds most infamous graffiti artists at work, on walls and in interview. As Banksy describes it, Its basically the story of how one man set out to film the un—filmable. And failed" - Hypebeast - Eugene Kan

Nike Air Max 90 – White/Volt-Ntrl Grey-Anthracite

Such a sweet colorway and tribute...AM95 Neons will always be my first sneaker love.

"This Nike Air Max 90 is an obvious reference to the Neon Air Max 95 that is now one of the most famous of all of Nike’s models. Black is used on the dark panel above the outsole, the lacelocks, and the heel tab. The toe is made of white perforated leather, and the collar is made of ripstop nylon. This color scheme preserves the old school look while giving the wearer some pops of lime green on the swoosh, inner lining, tongue embroidery, and below the air bubble on the outsole. Colorways like this one don’t usually last long, so if you want a pair of 90s to match your classic 95s, head to Germain e-tailer, Schuh You to cop them soon.
