HUF Los Angeles Closes

I suppose it was only a matter of time, given the economy and the original store closing. Hopefully they can recover while preserving their presence online and in other retailers brand offerings...

"San Francisco-based brand HUF has been a moving force in the streetwear industry since the brand’s first store opened in 2002. Founded by pro-skateboarder Keith Hufnagel, the HUF clothing line has been instrumental in terms of setting a West Coast urban aesthetic, however, it can be easy to forget that before the label existed, Keith’s store had to flourish. And flourish it did – becoming a mecca for exclusive and limited-edition sneakers, clothing and accessories and opening up a satellite location in Los Angeles. Now, nearly 10 years after opening its now-closed San Fransisco location, HUF has announced that its LA store will also close, leaving no retail locations left and effectively ending its physical presence as a brand. Below is the message that Keith left to explain HUF’s retail situation to confused fans and customers." - Hypebeast - Douglas Brundage
To whom it may concern:
We unexpectedly lost our lease recently at our HUF LA shop on Fairfax, and unfortunately closed its doors this past Sunday. We are all bummed about it, and will miss being on the block and all the good times we had at that shop… But change happens and we will keep cruising on and making great stuff. This upcoming year will mark HUF’s 10-year anniversary as a brand, which we will celebrate with the release of exclusive collaboration projects throughout the year. You can still pick up HUF products at your local HUF dealers, and can always find us right here on our website. We hope to be able to reopen HUF retail shops again in the future, but at this time are not sure when or where… We will keep you posted. As for now, our time and efforts will continue to be entirely devoted to perfecting the brand and its product. We could never have foreseen how rapidly the brand would grow since its beginning, and would like to sincerely thank all of you who have walked through our doors in any of our shops over the last decade. Thanks for the support, and stay tuned!
Sincerely,
Keith Hufnagel

Happy Birthday! Nike Swoosh!

Happy Belated Birthday Nike Swoosh! An amazing story behind the brand identity for one of the largest athletic footwear and clothing designers/manufacturers in the world.

For more details around this story, click the link at the end of the post to read further...

A simple check mark established itself as a timeless symbol on this Saturday some 40 years ago. With all the submissions in place, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recognized the Nike Swoosh logo on June 18th, 1971. But what became the designer of this icon, who reportedly gotten only $35 for her effort? Reporter Allan Brettman of The Oregonian tracked down graphic designer Carolyn Davidson, who indeed only billed the company $35, or $2 per hour for 17.5 hours, for her work. An assistant professor at Portland State University and a part-time executive at Blue Ribbon Sports, ’s chance meeting with Davidson, then a graphic designer major, landed her a freelance gig with Knight. After years of chart and presentation productions for Knight’s numerous meetings with Onitsuka Tiger of Japan, whose sneakers Blue Ribbon Sports distributed at the time. Knight asked Davidson to create something else, a logo. Disagreements between Knight and execs at Onitsuka made it clear he should create his own firm. But obstacles, especially the mammoth adidas, meant Knight needed something as symbolic as the 3-Stripe. That task went to Davidson.

Sketches after sketches, Knight and rest of the Blue Ribbon team – made up of Jeff Johnson and Bob Woodell, decided on a simple check mark with a curve, also Davidson’s favorite. Interestingly enough, Knight brushed at the Swoosh first, stated “…maybe it will grow on me.” So which came first? It was the Swoosh then the name “”, at the suggestion of ’s very first employee, Jeff Johnson. And what of Davidson’s compensation? In 1983, Knight and Woodell held a surprise party for her at ’s office (captured on video). Along with a Swoosh-shaped gold ring, studded with a small diamond, Woodell presented Davidson a stock certificate of the company. Though till this day Davidson won’t disclose just how much shares she received at the time. A rough calculation reveals if Davidson held onto just a single share of Nike stock, which she said she did, from 1983 to now including all the stock splits, that one share will amount to $643,035. via: Oregonian..." - Freshness

Xploderz Water Pellet Guns

Super Soakers were the authority in my childhood. Here's another game changer...

"It's about time someone offered all the advantages of paintball without the paint. Xploderz Water Pellet Guns ($15-$40) shoot pellets made of a super-absorbent polymer that you "grow" in water before loading into a cartridge and slapping on your weapon of choice: either the pistol-like XBlaster 200, the mid-sized, Uzi-like XStormer 1000, or the sniper-style XRanger 2000. As an added bonus, you can crush the spent ammo into your yard to help it stay healthy in the dry heat — the polymer was designed by the Department of Agriculture, after all. [via]" - Uncrate

Audi R18 – Pinewood Derby Racer | By Scout Leader Sam Francis

Time sure have changed from the days of simple kit Pinewood Derby Racers...

"With motorsports’ most prestigious endurance race, 24 Hours of Le Mans, to take place this weekend. It was only fitting to visit the most talked about “vehicle”, the Audi R18. Though quite impressive in itself, the subject matter in this case is the not the actual version of R18. Instead, its miniature version made by scout leader Sam Francis for the annual Pinewood Derby.

A headline feature story on Autoblog, the Francis’ pine doppelganger is such that its easily mistaken as the real thing at first glance. Made under strict guidelines set by Boy Scouts of America, the Pinewood Derby R18 comes in under 5 ounces and utilized wheels/axles stipulated by the Pinewood Derby organizers. It also have made from a block of pine and assembled in 30 days. But Francis had a few tricks up his sleeves too. With his know-hows as an electrical engineer, Francis added a a 3.6-volt lithium-ion battery and 14 LED as the R18′s headlights, stop lights, and status lights on the sides. In order to fully wire the model, it was made from hallowed out halves at first, put together near the end of the process. A poignant reminder that we all should’ve paid attention during those shop and craft classes back in high school… via: Autoblog" - Freshness
