New Work: Vignelli Gala at the Architectural League

The "Vignelli-isms" are great...

"On the evening of Tuesday, March 8, The Architectural League gave its President’s Medal to Lella and Massimo Vignelli. The award (past recipients of which include John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Hugh Ferriss, Joseph Urban, Richard Meier, Robert A.M. Stern, and Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown) was given to the Vignellis “in recognition of a body of work so influential in its breadth that it has shaped the very way we see the world.” The setting was a gala evening in midtown Manhattan attended by nearly 300 colleagues, friends and admirers of the guests of honor. Pentagram’s Michael Bierut, an Architectural League vice president who began his career over 30 years ago as a junior designer at Vignelli Associates, designed the evening’s program. With five different covers featuring five different classic Vignelli quotes (in Helvetica, of course) printed in PMS Super Warm Red (the couple’s favorite color), the programs were the perfect table settings for a memorable evening.

New York by Gehry

Happy Belated Birthday to one of the greatest, Frank Gehry...

"The formal opening of the 76-story 870 foot skyscraper New York by Gehry (previously Beekman Tower) was held this past Saturday. In celebration with hundreds of guests, the occasion also marked the Pritzker Prize winning architects 82nd birthday.

New York by Gehry, located within the Lower Manhattan skyline, has a recognizable facade of stainless steel cladding appearing as draped fabric. Now the tallest residential building in the Western Hemisphere the building boasts 903 luxury rental units and 22,000 sqf of amenity space.  A building under a lot of scrutiny during its design and construction phase, the completed New York by Gehry received remarks of praise from architecture critics stating that it is “the finest skyscraper to rise in since Eero Saarinen’s CBS building went up 46 years ago,” (NY Times) and from the New Yorker, “one of the most beautiful towers downtown”.

Restoring Japan’s confidence and its people’s big dreams

A prime example of a country being united during a period of disaster...

"Editor’s Note: Ayako Doi is an independent journalist and associate fellow of the Asia Society, an organization devoted to improving U.S.-Asia relations.
By Ayako Doi – Special to CNN
In the wake of the massive earthquake, devastating tsunami and nuclear catastrophe in Japan, it's hard to find a silver lining. Most certainly, the people struggling to survive don’t see it – nor do those who are frantically trying to help them.
But watching the unfathomable human tragedy unfold from afar, I can already see some real and potential positives.
One theme that has emerged in the international news coverage of the disaster is how calm, orderly and polite the Japanese people have been, even in the face of unimaginable hardship and deprivation. A radio report said tsunami victims in crowded shelters were sharing scarce supplies of water and instant noodles without fights or complaints. One Japanese observer said it brought tears to his eyes to see an elderly evacuee bow deeply in appreciation as he received a single rice ball upon his arrival at a shelter.
In a week since the disaster, not a single case of looting has been reported, and I haven't seen any scene of people shouting in anger or banging on the table. CNN's Anderson Cooper recently observed a lengthy line of cars queued at a gas station, and he expressed amazement at how no one was grumbling or trying to cut in line. (Here's another post on this from CNN.)
A television viewer in China commented about how impressed he was to see a crowd of stranded train commuters carefully leaving a path so emergency workers could pass freely without stepping on others. "China may have surpassed Japan in terms of GDP, but we cannot emulate the Japanese’s level of politeness," he wrote on his Twitter feed, which was seen more than 700,000 times, according to the Mainichi Daily News..." - Ayako Doi

Adapt Japan Earthquake Relief T-Shirt

Prayers go out to all those affected in Japan...

"Around 2:46 pm yesterday local time, an earthquake in the magnitude of 8.9 hit just off the coast of Japan, wrecked havoc with 33-foot high tsunami and subsequent aftershocks, some at the scale 6 and above. While it is still too early to completely assess the damages and causalities.  There are fears that they might go into the billions in recovery effort and thousands in death. With family and friends in Japan, clothing label Adapt wanted to do their part with a special charitable t-shirt instead of standing idly by. Stussy Deluxe x Master-Piece (MSPC)

Love the subtle colors with a little pop of neons. The rucksack is awesome...

"Sometimes, in seeking the best, you might have to think outside-of-the-box. That was exactly what Stussy Deluxe when it designed its accessories collection this season. Instead of mounting a quest for creating the best rucksack or wallet, the designers just asked the people from master-piece of Japan. Also known by its acronym MSPC, the accessories maker made its mark as one who’s willing to experiment with style and materials. Its quite usual, in fact, to see fabrics like tweed and herringbone wool intermixed with the more technical attributes like ballistic nylon and such, the same treatment went into the Stussy Deluxe x master-piece Collection as well. Premium leather trims with accents of suede and brightly colored strap locks, all on reinforced twill, a mix of style, function, and a whole lot of fun. The Stussy Deluxe x master-piece (MSPC) Collection is now available online and at Stussy Chapter Stores around the globe.

Keirin – Speed Racers

A brief glimpse into the perspective of Japan's Keirin professional cyclists...

Keirin: Speed Racers on Nowness.com.

"Nowness takes a very interesting look behind the scenes of the Japanese Keirin sport.
“Before fixed-gear bikes became de rigueur for urban aesthetes, they were the weapon of choice for Japan’s fearless Keirin cyclists. A gladiatorial incarnation of track cycling that dates back to 1948, the Japanese sporting phenomenon operates by an intricate set of rules that sees competitors jostling for position on steeply banked tracks at lightning fast speeds, all but encouraging spectacular crashes. In today’s film for NOWNESS, Jonathan de Villiers (whose fashion photography and portraiture has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Wallpaper* and Fantastic Man) traveled to the national Keirin school in Tokyo and the Tachikawa and Yokkaichi velodromes to decode the strategy that governs the racing phenomenon. “I knew next to nothing about it when I went,” says de Villiers, “but I’m a big admirer of the anthropological documentary where you get taken into a whole different world. And what a strange, special and complex universe it turned out to be.” The state-run industry amasses tens of billions of dollars in gambling revenue each year.”

HUF San Francisco Closes

A local bay-area sneaker establishment is now officially closing its doors after several years...

"Having had retail spots in SF since 2002, HUF are closing their final San Francisco shop on Hayes Street in the coming weeks. Though this is a strong blow to SF retail, the HUF brand will continue on, and the LA store will remain open.
Below is the closing note from Keith Hufnagel.

To Whom it may concern:
After 9 years of having retail spots in SF, I am selling our last SF shop on Hayes street. We had a great run in SF and I appreciate all the customers and friends we made through the shops over the years. As most of you know, I started my brand, HUF, through the shops. I never could anticipate how well it would be received and what it would grow into. In order to be the best I can be at producing clothing and footwear for my brand, I have to give up my original vision of having a shop where I sold other people’s brands. I’m pretty happy about the opportunity to focus on the HUF brand full-time and feel its time to pass the torch in SF to a new owner that will provide a cool, multi-line sneaker shop for the shoppers in Hayes. We will still be open for a little while in SF while the shop changes hands. We will continue to keep our HUF shop open on Fairfax in Los Angeles where we carry the complete HUF line as well as HUFshop only specialty product, from time to time. Being a skateboarder was a great launch pad for me to own a shop and the shops were a great opportunity to learn how to make clothing. Making clothes helped me learn to make shoes and skating in them helps me learn how to make them better. The business is an extension of myself and ever evolving. Many of the familiar faces you saw in the shops behind the counters over the years have moved on to help me at the brand with design, sales and marketing. The original HUF crew is alive and well. We look forward to bringing quality skateboard lifestyle apparel and footwear for years to come. If you are looking for something and can’t find it elsewhere, check out our site. www.hufsf.com . Thanks to everyone who ever set foot in a HUF shop in SF. We had a great time and hope you did too!
Sincerely,
Keith Hufnagel" - High Snobiety

Nike Sportswear – Air Presto | Summer 2011

So very pleased to see that Nike is bringing back the Air Presto. Definitely enjoying these new color options for the Summer. Grey, Orange and Purple may need to join the collection...

"In visiting the genealogy of Nike Free, its creator Tobie Hatfield, recounted Nike Free’s predecessor, the Nike Air Presto, during yesterday’s Nike Greater China Summit in Beijing. Debuted during early part of 2000, the Air Presto realized many breakthroughs, especially in the realm of material developments. For Hatfield, who was a star athlete in collegiate track & field competition, the Air Presto coalesced the elements so desired by runners up to that time – a blend of lightweight protection with amble support. From its establishment and subsequent sales (millions have sold since 2000), Hatfield realized the design limits set by capabilities of materials were no longer an issue. This put in the groundwork for the development of Nike Free some 4 years later.  A visual storytelling, Nike will launch the Air Presto the summer in several vibrant hues to coincide the new Nike Free Collection, and a way to convey its history in a tactile,  3-dimensional forms." - Freshness

Penfield – Spring/Summer 2011 – Jackets

Penfield with another well designed line of jackets for S/S '11...

"For Spring/Summer 2011, Penfield stayed very true to it’s roots: the Massachusetts-based clothing maker kept a very New England feel to the whole collection. Just to ensure that the collection isn’t boring though, Penfield introduced three new jackets: the Barnstable, Sconset and Walpole, and mixed in some Spring-appropriated brighter colors throughout the collection: select pieces are available in robin’s egg blue, burnt orange, and vibrant red. The Spring collection brings back some of the perennial favorites, like the Vassan, which was a predecessor to the two-tone mountain parkas that are now a part of many label’s outerwear collections. Interesting details include a fold-out extension on the Templeton jacket, to convert it into a long coat, and the diagonal chest pocket found on several of the pieces. Some pieces in the collection are so traditional, and done in such drab colors, that they might seem boring. But each piece in the collection is available in a number of color options; which can be seen in images after the jump, so there are more lively choices. The pieces are available at Penfield now, and will be showing up at accounts soon." - Freshness

Fuego Element Portable Grill

For the weekend warrior, tailgater or "anytime-is-good-to-grill-time" chef...

"We've loved Fuego's prior grills, but they all had one problem: they were stationary. The Fuego Element Portable Grill ($150) overcomes this limitation by using a totable body that features built-in legs that fold up to become handles, a red travel band to hold everything together when you're on the move, and an adjustable canvas shoulder strap for hands-free lugging. It's got a cast iron grill grate, push button ignition, an 8,000 BTU stainless steel burner, nearly 160 square inches of cooking area, and a dishwasher-safe tray to catch runoff, all inside a museum-quality design." - Uncrate

Lark Presents: Rewaxing your Barbour

For the DIY folks who like to connect with their gear and really understand the craftsmanship...

Lark - Rewaxing your Barbour. from CASTE on Vimeo.

"Heritage clothing is all well and good, but it really represents a lifestyle – right? Any Williamsburg hipster can dress like a mid-19th century hunter or lumberjack, but for the truly dedicated, heritage garments define your life and your activities. One thing that the dedicated must do is maintain their equipment; in the case of a waxed jacket from Barbour, one of those maintenance tasks is re-waxing seasonally. In an informational pseudo-commercial (albeit one that is beautifully shot, and a bit poignant) Vancouver based retailer Lark informs us about the proper way to refurbish a waxed Barbour jacket. If you follow the video precisely, you’ll need a tiny Barbour coat for your dog, a hipster-approved axe, and a beautiful cottage with a fully-finished workshed. Of course, all you really need is the jacket, some Barbour wax, and pot of hot water – but that wouldn’t make a great video. It’s actually really worth a watch; the technique will be handy for a few people, but the fun cinematography is the real value. Check out the Barbour video from LARK after the jump." - Freshness

Original Nike Waffle Iron Unearthed

History...

"Yesterday The Oregonian posted an article about the recent discovery of Bill Bowerman’s original waffle iron, the very same appliance that kick-started what would become the most widely recognized sportswear brand in the world. Like most long lost items, the iron was placed in the unlikeliest of places and discovered decades later by Melissa Bowerman, the daughter-in-law of the late Nike co-founder. Offered below is an excerpt of the article:
As Melissa Bowerman reached deep into a cupboard for a blanket against the night chill, she discovered a box stuffed with mud-caked shoes and a rusty appliance.
She showed the things to her husband, Jon, and his brother, Tom, who had found them buried near the house in Coburg where their father, former Oregon track coach Bill Bowerman, lived for decades with his wife, Barbara.
Melissa said she could sell the things at auction — she had a good cause in mind — but the two men laughed.
“‘No one’s going to want those,’” Melissa recalled the men saying last spring.
Oh, how wrong they were.
Excitement from the discovery would ripple across the state, from the headquarters near Beaverton of the company Bill co-founded to the tiny town of Fossil hours away where he spent his childhood. In addition to shoes with treads handmade by Bill, Melissa had stumbled upon Nike’s Holy Grail: the long-lost waffle iron that inspired him to craft the revolutionary sole that launched an athletic empire.
The article in its entirety can be read here.
