Stüssy has definitely made their mark. Starting in the 1980s in Southern California and holding strong until now, 2010...30 years later. I remember when I was in grade school and thought it was such a cool brand to have and ended up with a few shirts growing up. At the time it's roots were considered to be in surfwear and made it's way to skatewear as well when I was in school.
That's where it pretty much left off for me, grade school. I hadn't heard much about them once I started high school. A whole slew of other labels/companies made their mark and set their trends by then. With the ever changing market in fashion, trends come and go, as well as labels losing their household appeal. Despite the changes in the market, Stüssy has grown and become so much more.
It now garners a title of becoming more and more associated with streetwear nowadays. It's no longer just simple tshirts and what not. It has collaborated with several major labels throughout the world, many particularly in Japan. In addition, in the past year or so, they've also launched a Deluxe line which caters to a more mature look.
I'm definitely happy for Shawn Stüssy and his success, 30 years is a great accomplishment considering the industry and the fickle demographic that they're marketed to. I hope they can continue their success for another 30 years. Who knows, my kids might ask..."Dad, have you heard of Stüssy?" Then I'll go and show them the treasure chest full of vintage streetwear from back in the day.
Cheers to Stüssy, being there when I was a kid and even to this day now, when I'm an adult.
